Key Infrastructure Upgrades Completed at Bohol-Panglao and Laguindingan Airports

Major Enhancements at Bohol-Panglao and Laguindingan Airports

Recent critical upgrades have been finalized at the Bohol-Panglao International Airport and Laguindingan International Airport, significantly enhancing operational reliability and passenger convenience at these vital regional hubs.

Historical Development of Regional Airport Infrastructure

Over the past one to two decades, the Philippine airport system has seen shifting strategies toward modernization and increased capacity, particularly in provincial airports. Historically, the management of airports was predominantly government-led, with infrastructure development often constrained by limited resources and outdated facilities. In recent years, increased engagement in public-private partnerships has brought new vigor to upgrading airport infrastructure, reflecting a global trend toward combining public oversight with private sector efficiency. This has manifested in focused efforts on accessibility, safety, and service improvements across secondary airports, coinciding with expanding passenger volumes and growing economic activity in regional centers.

Current Upgrades and Implications for Freight and Passenger Transport

The projects concluded by Aboitiz InfraCapital, Inc. (AIC) included essential maintenance and system overhauls such as elevator repairs to enhance access for passengers with mobility challenges, evaluations of uninterruptible power supply systems to secure airport operations during power fluctuations, and servicing of baggage carousels aimed at reducing arrival wait times. Additionally, boarding bridges and baggage weighing scales underwent preventive maintenance at Bohol-Panglao International Airport.

These steps, coordinated with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), represent the initial phase of a broader modernization initiative intended to elevate provincial airports to higher standards of safety, reliability, and passenger experience.

For freight carriers and logistics providers operating in these regions, these improvements mean smoother handling of cargo shipments, better operational continuity, and potential expansion in cargo volumes due to enhanced airport capabilities. As airports become more reliable and efficient, the wider logistics ecosystem benefits through improved connections and scheduling certainty.

Passenger Traffic and Airport Rankings

Bohol-Panglao International Airport (BPIA)	Significant contributor	Increasing volumes ongoing	9th busiest	Leisure Hub (UNESCO Global Geopark proximity)
Laguindingan International Airport (LIA)	Significant contributor	Increasing volumes ongoing	6th busiest	Service Hub for Mindanao business and logistics

Statistical Insights into Airport Usage

Combined, these airports are forecasted to handle approximately 16 million passengers within the current year, accounting for over one-fifth of national air passenger traffic. This substantial movement underscores their growing importance in both domestic travel and cargo throughput, providing critical nodes in the country’s aviation and logistics network.
