Cross‑Border Parcel Weight Rules: Germany to Czech Republic
3/13/2026 · 1851 views
Most major door‑to‑door courier services between Germany and the Czech Republic apply a per‑parcel maximum of around 31.5 kg, with consignments above that threshold typically reclassified as palletized freight, LTL (less‑than‑truckload) or full truckload shipments.
Carrier categories and typical weight thresholds
Cross‑border shipments on the Germany–Czech route fall into several operational categories that determine pricing, documentation and handling:
- Standard courier parcels: Consumer and small‑business parcels transported door‑to‑door by parcel networks and national post operators. Typical per‑parcel maxima are around 31.5 kg.
- Express and palletized freight: Shipments that exceed parcel dimensions or weight are moved as pallet freight; common pallet limits range from one pallet up to multi‑pallet consignments depending on carrier capacity.
- LTL (consolidated) freight: Multiple shippers’ pallets combined on the same vehicle; priced per pallet, pallet‑space or weight band.
- FTL (full truckload): Shipments that require an entire vehicle; subject to vehicle gross weight and axle load rules.
Typical per‑service weight and handling overview
| Service type | Typical max weight per parcel | Operational notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard courier / parcel | ~31.5 kg | Door‑to‑door delivery; extra charges for oversize or bulky items |
| Postal international parcel | ~31.5 kg | Economical; track & trace varies by service level |
| Pallet freight / LTL | per pallet up to 1000+ kg (depends on carrier) | Quoted per pallet or per m³; includes terminal handling |
| FTL | Up to vehicle limits | Best for bulky or heavy consignments; fixed routing and lead times |
Dimensional limits, oversize and bulky goods
A weight limit is not the only trigger for a change in service category. Many couriers impose strict dimensional limits (length, girth and linear dimensions). A parcel under 31.5 kg but with extreme dimensions will often be rated as oversized and billed at pallet or volumetric rates. For cross‑border planning, treat both mass and cubic volume as cost drivers.
Packing and measurement best practices
- Measure and weigh packages after packaging to avoid underdeclaring dimensional weight.
- Use standardized pallet sizes where possible to reduce terminal handling fees.
- Label bulky or irregular items clearly and arrange for scheduled pickup if manual handling is required.
Documentation, regulations and operational considerations
Even on intra‑EU routes like Germany to the Czech Republic, transport documentation and regulatory compliance shape logistics operations. For road haulage, the CMR consignment note commonly accompanies international road transports and clarifies responsibilities for carrier, consignor and consignee. Dangerous goods must follow ADR requirements regardless of route, and carriers will refuse undeclared hazardous items.
Key documents and declarations
- CMR note: Standard for international road freight operations.
- Packing list & commercial invoice: Required for cross‑border commercial shipments and for customs when non‑EU goods are involved.
- Certificates for regulated goods: Food, chemicals or regulated items may need specific certifications even for intra‑EU movements.
Pricing drivers and surcharge mechanics
Price formation for parcels on this corridor typically includes a base tariff plus add‑ons for overweight, oversize, additional handling, remote pickups, or delivery refusals. Carriers frequently apply manual handling surcharges for heavy or bulky single pieces, and pallet freight usually incurs terminal access and pallet handling fees.
Common surcharge categories
- Overweight or oversized piece fees
- Fuel and environmental levies
- Pickup or delivery to non‑standard locations
- Weekend or timed deliveries
Operational tips for shippers and carriers
Shippers can reduce unexpected costs by clarifying limits with chosen carriers before booking: confirm maximum single piece weight, allowed dimensions, and whether a shipment will be treated as parcel or pallet. Carriers should standardize pallet dimensions and provide clear pallet packing rules to minimize terminal refusals. For routings where frequent oversize shipments occur, negotiate LTL or FTL contracts rather than relying on parcel rates.
Checklist before dispatch
- Confirm per‑parcel weight limit with selected carrier.
- Verify dimensional weight calculations and packaging.
- Ensure appropriate consignment documentation (CMR, invoices) is ready.
- Declare any dangerous or regulated goods per ADR and carrier policy.
