Overview of Indian Railways’ Freight Milestone in FY26
Indian Railways has achieved a significant freight transport milestone, having exceeded the 1 billion tonne mark during the fiscal year 2025-26. The freight loading reached 1,020 million tonnes, underscoring the Railways' critical role in supporting India's rapid industrialization and infrastructure growth.
Historical Perspective: Growth in Freight Transport Over Two Decades
Over the past 20 years, Indian Railways has steadily expanded its freight capacity, making it one of the busiest freight carriers globally. The evolution includes expanding route capacity, modernizing terminals, and adopting strategic policies aimed at bulk handling efficiency. This growth has been closely tied to India’s increasing demand for raw materials like coal, iron ore, and cement, which form the backbone of the country's industrial and construction sectors. By gradually integrating reforms and investing in infrastructure, Indian Railways has enhanced its efficiency and throughput, surpassing the billion-tonne freight mark as a testament to this progress.
Key Freight Commodities in FY26
| Commodity | Freight Loading (Million Tonnes) |
|---|---|
| Coal | 505 |
| Iron Ore | 115 |
| Cement | 92 |
| Container Traffic | 59 |
| Pig Iron & Finished Steel | 47 |
| Fertilizers | 42 |

Current Developments and Their Influence on Freight Carriers
The present growth trajectory of Indian Railways is being driven by daily freight loading that has increased to an average of 4.4 million tonnes, up from 4.2 million tonnes during the previous fiscal year. This increase not only highlights the Railways’ operational resilience but also impacts freight carriers by increasing demand for efficient, reliable transport services. This environment presents enhanced income opportunities for carriers due to higher volumes and the expansion of bulk freight such as coal and cement.
Moreover, recent reforms such as the Policy for Bulk Cement Terminals and rationalized freight rates for containerized cement movement are transforming bulk goods logistics. These initiatives are designed to boost handling capacity, reduce transit times, and cut logistics costs, directly benefiting freight operators and end users alike.
Environmental and Operational Advantages of Rail Freight Growth
Shifting bulk commodity movement from road to rail delivers considerable environmental benefits by reducing emissions and decongesting highways. The increased reliance on rail freight supports greener logistics solutions, crucial for sustainable development. This shift especially benefits Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which gain access to more cost-effective transportation options.
Statistical Highlights of Indian Railways Freight Loading in FY26
Freight loading between April and October 2025 reached 935.1 million tonnes, up from 906.9 million tonnes in the same period last year.
Coal accounted for nearly half of the total freight, emphasizing its dominant role in the energy and industrial sectors.
Container traffic, an indicator of trade and manufacturing growth, registered 59 million tonnes, signifying increased containerized shipments.
