Selecting Poznań, Wrocław or Łódź for a Distribution Center
3/21/2026 · 1182 views
Poznań’s location on the A2 motorway and proximity to major rail corridors gives it a measurable advantage for west–east container trucking flows, while Wrocław leverages the A4 corridor for southbound industrial supply chains and Łódź provides the most central access to Poland’s domestic market and north–south routes.
Strategic transport corridors and modal access
When comparing the three cities, evaluate modal connectivity first: Poznań provides strong direct access to the A2 axis toward Germany and to intermodal terminals that support combined rail and road moves. Wrocław sits on the A4 corridor, which is relevant for Southern Europe and industrial clusters near the Czech and Slovak borders. Łódź’s central position makes it a hub for shorter domestic distribution legs and efficient last-mile operations across Poland.
Key modal assets at a glance
| City | Highway access | Rail & intermodal | Airport for air freight | Market reach |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Poznań | A2 corridor (west–east) | Intermodal terminals and container yards | Poznań–Ławica (regional air cargo) | Strong westward export, quick access to German markets |
| Wrocław | A4 corridor (east–west, southern) | Good rail links to Czechia and Slovakia | Wrocław–Copernicus (regional air freight) | Southern Poland and Central Europe industrial routes |
| Łódź | Central node with fast connections to A1/A2 corridors | Developing intermodal infrastructure, large freight terminals nearby | Łódź Władysław Reymont (regional) | Domestic distribution and short international hauls |
Operational costs, workforce and land availability
Site selection must balance land costs, warehouse leasing rates, local wages, and availability of skilled logistics personnel. Historically, central locations such as Łódź offer better access to a large labor pool and lower median rents for large-format warehouses compared with premium sites in Poznań and Wrocław, which can command higher rents closer to established industrial parks.
- Labor pool: Łódź benefits from a larger metropolitan workforce due to its population density and history of manufacturing; Poznań and Wrocław supply competitive logistics talent with strong regional vocational training programmes.
- Real estate: Poznań and Wrocław have established modern logistics parks with Class A warehouses; Łódź often provides more scalable land plots and lower greenfield development costs.
- Operational expenses: Consider total landed cost per pallet per month rather than rent alone — factoring local taxes, utilities, and municipal fees.
Qualitative comparison table
| Factor | Poznań | Wrocław | Łódź |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accessibility for international trucking | High | High (southbound) | Medium (central) |
| Availability of large plots | Medium | Medium | High |
| Labor cost & availability | Competitive | Competitive | Lower cost, larger pool |
| Intermodal options | Strong | Good | Growing |
| Proximity to suppliers | Good for western suppliers | Good for southern suppliers | Best for central supplier networks |
Regulatory, zoning and environmental considerations
Local zoning rules, building permits, and environmental restrictions directly affect lead times for DC construction and expansion. All three cities operate under Polish national regulations, but municipal practices differ in processing times for permits, local incentives, and noise or emissions restrictions affecting 24/7 operations. Companies should evaluate:
- Permitting timelines for construction and loading hours;
- Local incentives such as tax breaks, reduced development fees, or assistance in Special Economic Zones (SEZs);
- Environmental constraints including low-emission zones or local ordinances impacting diesel truck access during certain hours.
Checklist for legal compliance
- Confirm land-use designation and suitable logistics zoning.
- Estimate permit lead times for warehousing and customs-bonded areas.
- Verify labor regulations, shift patterns, and local collective agreements.
- Assess environmental reporting obligations and emissions compliance for fleet operations.
Scenario-based recommendations
Choose the city that best fits the intended logistics strategy:
- E-commerce & last-mile focus: Select Łódź for central reach and shorter average delivery distances to Poland’s largest population centers.
- Export-oriented, westbound freight: Poznań is optimal due to A2 corridor access and proximity to German gateways for cross-border trucking and container transport.
- Industrial supply chain and cross-border manufacturing: Wrocław suits firms requiring rapid access to southern European routes and neighboring manufacturing clusters.
Reverse logistics and returns handling
For companies with high return volumes, place the DC where processing labor is abundant and real estate allows efficient sorting and secondary packaging. Łódź typically offers cost advantages for labor-intensive returns processing.
Cost modeling and KPIs to monitor
When building the business case, calculate:
- Cost per pallet per month including rent, labor, utilities and local fees;
- Average truck turnaround time at the chosen site;
- Intermodal handling time and frequency of container arrivals/departures;
- Order-to-delivery lead time to core markets.
Sample KPI table
| KPI | Target | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Truck turnaround (hours) | <3 | Reduces driver costs and improves fleet utilization |
| Average delivery lead time (days) | <2 domestic | Supports fast retail and e‑commerce fulfillment |
| Intermodal dwell time (hours) | <24 | Minimizes container demurrage and warehousing delays |
How GetTransport supports carriers and logistics planners
GetTransport provides a platform enabling carriers and DC operators to access verified container freight and container trucking opportunities across these regions. By offering flexible digital tendering, real-time order matching and transparent pricing, the platform helps carriers choose the most profitable orders, balance utilization across corridors such as A2 and A4, and reduce dependence on single large shippers’ routing mandates.
Technology features that matter:
- Order visibility and matching to optimize empty runs and backhauls;
- Flexible billing and contract templates to suit local regulations;
- Analytics to monitor haulage costs, dwell time, and shipment performance.
Optional statistics: approximate population sizes—Łódź ~670,000, Wrocław ~640,000 and Poznań ~540,000—translate to local labor availability and urban delivery volumes; airports in each city support regional airfreight for time‑sensitive shipments.
Provide a short forecast on how this news could impact the global logistics. If it's insignificant globally, please mention that. However, highlight that it's still relevant to us, as GetTransport.com aims to stay abreast of all developments and keep pace with the changing world. The selection between Poznań, Wrocław and Łódź will not radically shift global shipping lanes, but it affects regional distribution efficiencies, modal mixes and cost structures. For example, locating a DC in Poznań can lower westbound container trucking times and reduce demurrage risk for shipments bound for German ports, while Łódź can cut average domestic delivery distance and therefore last-mile costs.
