Best Practices for Shipping Construction Materials on Pallets
2026/3/13 · 1954 views
For loaded pallets of bricks, bags of cement, timber packs or sheet goods, enforce a minimum of two transverse and two longitudinal straps per pallet for intermodal road-to-container movements, and keep the palletized unit within the trailer's rated floor load and the vehicle's axle limits to avoid overweight penalties.
Pallet preparation and load configuration
Palletized shipments start with correct selection and configuration. Use a pallet platform rated above the intended net load and maintain a stable footprint: do not allow any part of the cargo to extend beyond the pallet perimeter unless it is secured by a larger base. Keep the vertical center of gravity low by stacking heavier items at the bottom and avoid loose irregular items without containment.
Recommended pallet and packaging choices
- Wood or plastic pallets: choose based on moisture sensitivity and reuse needs; plastic resists moisture and is preferred for export containers where ISPM‑15 wood treatment may be an issue.
- Shrink wrap / stretch film: apply at least three full turns around the pallet with a top sheet when dust or moisture protection is required.
- Edge protectors and corner boards: place under straps to distribute tension and prevent strap cutting into packaged goods.
- Pallet collars: for small loose items, collars increase rigidity and reduce shifting inside shrink wrap.
Load balance and weight distribution
Balance each pallet so the center of gravity remains inside the pallet footprint. For multi-pallet loads in trailers or containers, align pallets so weight is distributed across axles and between the front and rear of the vehicle. When loading containers, place the heaviest pallets toward the center and lower deck to minimize roll and pitch forces during sea or rail transit.
Securing methods and hardware
Proper securing reduces claims for damaged goods and prevents load shifts that can lead to fines or rejected deliveries. Use a combination of mechanical and protective measures rather than relying on a single method.
Strapping, lashing and tension
- Strap types: polyester (PET) webbing is preferred for high-tension restraint with minimal elongation; steel straps for very heavy or sharp-edged units where higher breaking strength is required.
- Tension: follow manufacturer tension recommendations; over-tensioning can crush materials, under-tensioning permits movement.
- Number and placement: at least two straps for stable brick or block pallets and additional straps for taller or irregular loads.
Edge protection and pallet stability
Place edge protectors under straps on all exposed edges. For sheet goods and plywood, use both vertical and horizontal protection to prevent strap indentation and to maintain uniform compression across the stack.
| Material type | Pallet max weight (kg) | Strap type | Protective measures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bricks / blocks | 1000–1500 | Steel or PET | Corner boards, shrink wrap |
| Cement bags | 500–1000 | PET or composite | Top sheet, stretch film |
| Timber packs | 800–2000 | Steel (long hauls) | Chocks, anti-slip mats |
| Sheet goods (plywood, drywall) | 400–1200 | PET | Vertical strapping, edge boards |
Labeling, documentation and legal considerations
Correct labeling and documentation reduce delays at checkpoints and disputes during claims. Clearly mark each pallet with: a unique pallet ID, gross weight, handling marks (e.g., "This Side Up", "Fragile"), and delivery sequence if part of a multi-pallet consignment. For international shipments, ensure compliance with customs and phytosanitary rules—use ISPM‑15‑compliant pallets where required and include full freight documentation in the carrier manifest.
Regulatory and carrier obligations
Different jurisdictions set rules for cargo securement. For example, road authorities often require documented load restraint procedures and drivers are usually responsible for periodic checks en route. Container packing standards, such as the CTU Code recommendations for safe handling and lashing, are widely accepted for export packing and insurance underwriting. Non-compliance can result in fines, refused loading, or voided insurance.
Practical checklist before pickup
- Verify pallet integrity — no loose boards or broken stringers for wooden pallets.
- Confirm gross weight and ensure it matches the shipping documents.
- Check straps and seals for appropriate tension and secure seal numbers.
- Photograph the loaded pallets and label positions as evidence for carriers and shippers.
- Ensure forklift and handling access — four-way entry preferred for rapid handling.
Optional logistics fact: around 80% of global trade by volume moves by sea, so palletized construction materials destined for international projects typically enter the container and port systems where packing methods and pallet securing directly affect container freight efficiency and damage rates.
The GetTransport global marketplace helps carriers and small hauliers manage palletized construction freight by providing a flexible platform to select profitable loads. With modern matching algorithms, real-time order boards and verified shippers, carriers can influence their income stream, reduce empty miles, and avoid overreliance on large corporate routing policies. Integration of digital documentation and mobile check-in also speeds pickup and reduces detention risk.
