Critical KPI Metrics Dutch Carriers Should Track Now

Immediate operational metrics Dutch carriers must monitor
Dutch carriers targeting a sub‑5% empty running ratio and an on‑time performance (OTP) above 95% need continuous monitoring of distance, load, and time‑based metrics. Measuring average trip distance, loaded versus empty kilometers, and turnaround time at terminals gives carriers direct insight into utilization and cost per kilometer—metrics that directly affect bidding and contract pricing in the Benelux and wider EU lanes.
Core KPIs and why they matter
Below are the primary KPIs that should be captured daily by fleet managers and operations teams to preserve margin, comply with regulatory requirements, and improve service levels.
- On‑time performance (OTP) — percentage of deliveries completed within agreed time windows.
- Empty running ratio — share of kilometers driven without paying cargo.
- Load factor / Utilization — percentage of vehicle capacity occupied (volume or weight basis).
- Fuel consumption per 100 km — liters or kWh per 100 km for diesel and electric fleets respectively.
- Turnaround time — time spent at customer sites, terminals, and depots per stop.
- Claims and damage rate — number of cargo claims per 1,000 shipments.
- First‑time delivery success — deliveries completed without reattempts.
- CO2 emissions per ton‑km — metric increasingly tied to procurement decisions.
- Average dwell time — yard or port dwell that affects schedule integrity.
- Delivery accuracy (POD match) — percentage of shipments with correct paperwork and proof of delivery.
KPI definitions, formulas and target ranges
| KPI | Formula | Practical target (typical) |
|---|---|---|
| On‑time performance | (On‑time deliveries / Total deliveries) × 100% | ≥95% |
| Empty running ratio | (Empty km / Total km) × 100% | 95%, empty running 80%. These benchmarks can be adjusted by fleet mix and service type (e.g., refrigerated versus dry freight). |
