Logistics Requirements for Selling on Amazon in Germany
6-3-2026 · 2777 views
Shipments stored in Germany trigger domestic VAT registration and local return handling obligations, so sellers using Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) or storing inventory in German warehouses must register for German VAT, comply with packaging legislation, and meet Amazon’s inbound shipment and labeling rules before stock is accepted.
Core logistics obligations for selling on Amazon.de
Sellers aiming to list on Amazon.de must align physical handling with regulatory and marketplace requirements. Core operational items include: customs and import documentation for non-EU consignments, proper German-language labeling, packaging licensing under national law, battery and WEEE registrations when applicable, and Amazon-specific FNSKU and suffocation-warning labeling for each unit. Failure to meet these can lead to blocked inventory, fines, or removal from the fulfilment network.
VAT, customs and storage implications
When inventory is stored in Germany or elsewhere in the EU, the seller typically needs a local VAT registration in the country of storage. For importers, an EORI number is required for customs clearance. Use of Amazon FBA means Amazon will accept inbound pallets and parcels only if they conform to Amazon’s freight and palletization requirements; noncompliant shipments can incur rework or storage penalties.
Practical checklist: VAT and customs
- Obtain an EORI number if shipping from outside the EU.
- Register for German VAT if your goods are kept in German fulfillment centers or you exceed distance‑selling thresholds.
- Consider OSS/IOSS for low‑value shipments to simplify VAT accounting for EU‑wide cross‑border sales where applicable.
- Prepare commercial invoices and accurate commodity codes (HS codes) to prevent customs delays.
Labeling, packaging and environmental compliance
German market access includes both marketplace and statutory obligations. Products must carry required safety and consumer information in German where mandated; certain categories require CE marking, and electrical/electronic goods fall under WEEE reporting rules. Germany’s packaging law (VerpackG) requires sellers to register packaging with the national packaging register and participate in a dual system or equivalent scheme for recovery and recycling.
| Obligation | Who is responsible | Logistics impact |
|---|---|---|
| VAT registration | Seller or appointed fiscal representative | Controls invoicing, affects cash flow and pricing |
| Packaging licensing (VerpackG) | Producer/first distributor in Germany | Requires registration; extra costs per shipment |
| WEEE/Battery registration | Manufacturer/importer/seller | Returns processing and take-back logistics |
| Amazon FBA labels and prep | Seller (or Amazon Prep Services) | Inbound labeling, pallet rules, and potential prep fees |
Packaging, unitization and inbound shipping standards
Amazon maintains strict inbound shipment instructions. Pallets must be unitized and labeled with Amazon shipment IDs; loose or mixed pallets may be rejected. For small parcels, plastic wrap thickness, box strength, and internal protection affect acceptance and claims for transit damage. Use standardized pallet dimensions and clearly mark dangerous goods if applicable to avoid refusal at the fulfillment center.
Returns and reverse logistics
Germany’s consumer-protection framework includes mandatory return rights and clear refund timelines. Sellers using FBA benefit from Amazon’s returns flow, but must still ensure compliance with local laws for warranty and returns when using FBM (Fulfilled by Merchant). Reverse logistics planning should include inspection, refurbishment, disposal routes for non‑resalable items, and handling of WEEE/battery returns where applicable.
Returns handling steps
- Define clear German-language return instructions on product pages.
- Decide whether to process returns centrally (in Germany) or regionally.
- Set up a refurbishment or secondary sales channel to limit write-offs.
- Ensure safe disposal and reporting for electronic waste and batteries.
Fulfillment options and their logistics trade-offs
Choosing between FBA and FBM shapes the logistics model. FBA shifts operational burden to Amazon but introduces inventory placement rules and fees; FBM retains full control of shipping and returns but requires local logistics infrastructure and faster customer-response capability.
| Aspect | FBA | FBM |
|---|---|---|
| Inventory control | Distributed across Amazon centers | Centralized with seller |
| Logistics complexity | Higher inbound requirements, less outbound management | More outbound shipping and returns responsibility |
| Compliance admin | Seller still responsible for legal registrations | Seller must manage all compliance and local obligations |
| Cost | Storage, pick & pack, returns fees | Carrier and warehouse expenses; potential lower per-unit fees |
Operational steps to prepare inventory for Amazon Germany
Implement the following sequence to avoid delays at Amazon intake and customs:
- Confirm product category regulatory requirements (CE, chemical labeling, textiles, toys).
- Register for necessary German and EU schemes (VAT, VerpackG, WEEE, battery registers).
- Apply Amazon labeling standards per SKU and print FNSKU labels for each unit.
- Book compliant inbound freight with clear ASN (Advanced Shipping Notice) per Amazon rules.
- Arrange returns and disposal workflows to meet German consumer law.
Cost control and risk mitigation
Stock allocation across EU fulfillment centers can reduce delivery times but increases VAT and compliance complexity. To mitigate risk, use staged inventory placement, work with experienced customs brokers, and document chain-of-custody for regulated products. Include contingency budgets for repacking, noncompliance fines, and extended storage fees.
Optional data point: Germany is one of the largest e-commerce markets in Europe and continues to demand high standards for packaging, returns management, and regulatory reporting — trends that shape carrier demand and warehouse utilization across the EU.
How GetTransport can help carriers and sellers
GetTransport’s global marketplace connects carriers, freight forwarders, and shippers with technology that exposes profitable orders and optimizes route and load consolidation. Under the compliance environment required by Amazon.de, carriers can use the platform to select assignments that match required documentation experience (customs paperwork, palletization rules, hazardous goods handling) and to leverage transparent pricing tools that allow them to influence income without relying solely on large integrators’ policies.
The platform’s scheduling, tracking, and document-exchange features reduce administrative friction for carriers handling multiple VAT jurisdictions or complex return flows, enabling faster customs clearance, fewer rejections at fulfillment centers, and better margin control.
The stricter compliance landscape in Germany will likely increase demand for specialized transport and customs services, especially for storage-to-Amazon inbound lanes. Globally, the impact is moderate but important for EU cross-border sellers: logistics providers will need better compliance capabilities to maintain service quality.
