Brussels Airport to Launch Air China Flights to Beijing and Chengdu in 2026

Expanding Horizons: Air China’s Entry to Brussels Airport

Beginning March 2026, Brussels Airport will broaden its Asian network with Air China inaugurating direct flights to two prominent Chinese cities: Beijing and Chengdu. This move signifies a major step for enhancing the airport’s intercontinental connectivity and cargo transport potential.

Historical Evolution of Brussels Airport’s Asian Routes

Over the past two decades, Brussels Airport has steadily developed its intercontinental routes, progressively increasing links with Asia. Historically focused on direct services to established hubs like Hong Kong and Bangkok, the airport's network has mirrored the growth in trade and passenger demands between Europe and Asia. The arrival of new routes to Chinese cities, such as Chongqing, set the stage for further expansion, demonstrating a commitment to accommodating the region's growing economic and tourism ties.

Current Developments and Implications for Freight and Passenger Flow

With Air China’s introduction of flights to Beijing, China's political and cultural nucleus, and Chengdu, a burgeoning business and leisure destination in Sichuan province, Brussels Airport positions itself as a vital gateway to a broad swath of Asia. The addition of Chengdu, previously served only by cargo operations, opens a new corridor for both passenger and freight traffic. Regular services — initially five flights per week to Beijing and thrice weekly to Chengdu, escalating to daily summer flights for Beijing — optimize connections for varied traveler needs. This enhancement in frequency and destination diversity is anticipated to influence freight carriers significantly by creating new shipment routes, facilitating quicker delivery times, and expanding access to emerging markets.

Boosting Freight Transport Dynamics

The inauguration of these routes not only serves passengers but also invigorates cargo transportation capabilities. Chengdu’s Tianfu Airport, a state-of-the-art hub launched in 2021 and designed to become one of China’s largest, is expected to handle increased cargo volumes, bolstering global freight and logistic chains. This offers freight carriers and logistics companies new opportunities for efficient container freight transport, especially for bulky and time-sensitive goods.

Key Statistics: Rapid Growth in China-Europe Air Connectivity

Year	Passenger Flights from Brussels to China	Cargo Flights to Chengdu
2010	Limited, mainly via transfer hubs	None to Chengdu
2023	Direct to Hong Kong, Bangkok, Chongqing launched	Direct cargo to Chengdu only
2026 (Projected)	Direct flights to Beijing (daily in summer) and Chengdu (3 weekly)	Expanded cargo capacity at Chengdu Tianfu Airport

This trend underlines an expanding market for both passenger and cargo transport, reflecting China’s growing middle class and business environment that demands increased freight movement globally.
