Surge in Middle East Air Freight Volume and Its Impact on Global Cargo Logistics

Steady Growth in Middle Eastern Air Cargo and Global Air Freight

The Middle East region has experienced a notable 5.7% increase in air cargo demand, standing out as one of the fastest-growing contributors to the recent rise in global air freight volumes. This trend coincides with a global upswing in cargo tonne-kilometres (CTKs), which surged by 4.1% year-on-year in October 2025, marking eight consecutive months of growth.

A Two-Decade Evolution of Middle East Air Cargo

Over the last twenty years, strategic investment in airport infrastructure and cargo capacity in the Middle East has reshaped the region’s logistics landscape. Major carriers have expanded their fleets and enhanced cargo handling capabilities, capitalizing on the Middle East’s prime geographical position bridging key manufacturing hubs in Asia with consumption markets in Europe and Africa. This evolution transformed Gulf hubs into global transit points capable of managing increasing trade flows efficiently.

The Current Dynamics and Freight Carrier Implications

Today, the Middle East’s air cargo market benefits from approximately a 10% annual increase in cargo capacity, facilitating surges in trade routes, especially between Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. This expansion, however, introduces a balancing act for carriers: while volume and routes flourish, rising capacity slightly outpaces demand, which can pressure load factors and profit margins. Freight carriers must navigate longer transit sectors and possible airspace restrictions carefully, ensuring that increased capacity translates into sustainable income.

Trade Lanes and E-Commerce’s Role

• Routes connecting Europe, Asia, and the Middle East are witnessing robust double-digit growth.

• The Asia-North America corridor shows signs of strain, contrasting with the boom elsewhere.

• E-commerce continues to spur demand for expedited delivery, supporting premium air freight by carriers with strong freighter fleets and integrated passenger flights.

Key Statistics Illustrating Growth

In October 2025 alone, global air freight volumes reached record highs, propelled by the Middle East’s impressive 5.7% demand increase. The region's capacity growth of around 10% annually enables carriers to effectively manage this demand spike. Meanwhile, the global increase in cargo capacity stands at roughly 5.1%, indicating an overall trend of expanding air freight operations worldwide.
