Warehouse Placement Strategies for Czech E-commerce Sellers
6/3/2026 · 1149 views
Placing a primary fulfillment hub within 100–150 km of Prague, complemented by secondary hubs near Brno and Ostrava and a network of local cross-docks, can reduce typical last‑mile transit by up to 24–48 hours for most Czech destinations and cut per‑parcel transport cost by an estimated 15–30% through route consolidation and lower empty‑run ratios.
Regional hub architecture and coverage targets
Adopting a three‑tier warehouse topology—central fulfillment, regional distribution centers (RDCs), and micro‑fulfillment nodes—aligns capacity with population density and demand clustering. The Czech Republic’s compact geography favors a small number of well‑located RDCs rather than many diffuse warehouses. For carriers and shippers, this translates into predictable routing, higher vehicle fill rates, and simplified scheduling.
Core placement principles
- Drive‑time optimization: prioritize locations where >70% of orders are reachable within a 90–120 minute drive from the RDC.
- Load factor improvement: choose sites that enable multi‑stop loops and reduce return‑to‑base empty kilometers.
- Cross‑dock capability: integrate cross‑docking to minimize handling and shorten order cycle time for fast movers.
- Scalability: prefer logistics parks with expandable yards and easy access to major motorways (D1, D2, D11).
Hub types and expected impacts
| Hub type | Coverage radius | Typical use | Expected benefit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central Fulfillment | Nationwide | Bulk storage, returns, replenishment | Lower inventory carrying costs, efficient replenishment |
| Regional Distribution Center (RDC) | 100–200 km | High‑turn SKUs, cross‑dock, same‑day/next‑day | Reduced last‑mile lead times, lower transport cost per parcel |
| Micro‑fulfillment | 0–50 km | Urban quick delivery, click‑and‑collect | Highest service levels, increased operating expense |
Demand forecasting and inventory positioning
Effective forecasting drives warehouse placement decisions: cluster SKUs with consistent, high velocity near RDCs, and keep slow movers centralized. Use rolling 30‑ to 90‑day demand windows combined with seasonal multipliers for promotions and holidays. For cross‑border shipments into and out of the Czech Republic, position buffer stock at the RDCs closest to major border crossings to reduce import dwell time.
Practical inventory rules
- Top 20% SKUs: store at micro or regional nodes to achieve same‑day/next‑day service.
- Mid‑range SKUs: keep at RDCs with periodic replenishment from central fulfillment.
- Low velocity: centralize in the main fulfillment center to optimize space utilization.
Transport network design and cost levers
Network design should be iteratively tested with scenario modelling: vary the number of RDCs, their locations, and transport frequencies to find the minimum total landed cost subject to delivery time constraints. Key levers include consolidation windows, load factors, and modal mix (road vs intermodal for long feeder legs).
KPIs to monitor
- Average delivery time (order placement to handover)
- Transport cost per parcel
- Truck utilization rate
- Inventory days of supply by location
- Empty kilometers percentage
Routing and consolidation tactics
Implement fixed departure windows for regional lanes and allow dynamic consolidation at RDCs to reduce tail mileage. Where feasible, combine linehaul moves for multiple e‑commerce clients into full truckloads to lower unit cost while maintaining delivery service levels.
Site selection and regulatory considerations
Warehouse site choices must balance rental or acquisition costs, access to skilled labor, and planning/regulatory constraints. Municipal zoning, noise restrictions, and permitted operating hours can materially influence operating economics, especially for night sorting and same‑day dispatch operations. Prioritize logistics parks that permit 24/7 operations if aiming to maximize throughput and evening delivery windows.
Real estate checklist
- Access to major highways and arterial roads
- Availability of staging yards for trailers
- Connectivity to rail terminals for intermodal options
- Proximity to labor pools and public transport
- Local permitting for extended operating hours
Technology stack and operational processes
Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) with slotting optimization, a Transportation Management System (TMS) for route planning, and real‑time telematics for fleet monitoring are essential. Integrate order management with carrier APIs to automate booking, track ETA, and reduce manual touchpoints.
Implementation roadmap
- Map current demand by postal code and identify coverage gaps.
- Run scenario models for 1–4 RDCs and evaluate tradeoffs.
- Select sites with scalable footprints and cross‑dock capacity.
- Deploy WMS/TMS integrations and pilot with a subset of SKUs.
- Measure KPIs and iterate placements and replenishment cycles.
Optional statistics: e‑commerce logistics pilots in compact European markets often report inventory days reductions of 10–25% and last‑mile cost reductions in the 15–30% range after consolidating to an RDC topology combined with micro‑fulfillment nodes. These improvements stem from shorter routing, higher vehicle utilization, and fewer split deliveries.
How GetTransport can help carriers and shippers
GetTransport provides a marketplace and tools that enable carriers to bid on orders near their preferred lanes, improving fleet utilization and income stability. By exposing a broad set of verified container freight and container trucking opportunities, the platform reduces dependence on a small number of large corporate shippers and allows carriers to select the most profitable container transport and palletized loads. Integrated route optimization and transparent order details let carriers minimize empty runs and maximize revenue per trip.
For shippers, GetTransport accelerates matching to reliable carriers for cargo, freight, and shipment needs—supporting both full‑truckload and multi‑stop delivery patterns. The platform’s technologies simplify booking, documentation, and tracking so logistics managers can focus on inventory placement and network performance rather than manual tendering.
