Current Trends in India’s Cargo Volume Growth
India’s cargo volumes have shown moderate growth, with a year-on-year (YoY) increase of 4.1% during the first seven months of fiscal year 2025-26 (FY26). This follows a 3.2% growth in FY25 and 7.7% in FY24, revealing a deceleration in growth momentum over recent years.
Historical Overview of Cargo Growth in India
Over the past decade and a half, Indian ports have experienced varying cargo volume trends that reflect the country’s evolving industrial and trade landscape. Earlier years saw more robust growth, especially in containerized cargo, while bulk segments like coal experienced fluctuating demand. Notably, non-major ports have emerged as key drivers of container cargo expansion, outpacing major ports with approximately 16% YoY growth compared to 7% at major ports in FY25. This evolution illustrates a shift towards diversified, agile port operations accommodating increasing containerization and segmented cargo flows.
Present Situation and Forecasted Impact on Freight Carriers
The present growth trajectory suggests a steady yet cautious increase in volumes, expected to range between 3-5% YoY in FY26. This growth is primarily fueled by healthy demand in container cargo and fertilizer shipments, while the petroleum, oils, and lubricants (POL) sector continues at a more conservative rate of 2-4%, aligned with long-term trends. Coal cargo growth is moderate, likely due to changing energy consumption patterns and environmental considerations. For freight carriers, this evolving scenario signals both opportunity and challenge: moderate volume growth may limit explosive revenue spikes but encourages carriers to optimize efficiency and service quality to capture steady business. The dominance of containerized cargo means truck, rail, and intermodal logistics providers need to enhance operational readiness and network flexibility to meet the dynamic demand.
