NorthPort Enhances Operations with New Konecranes Gottwald ESP 5 Mobile Harbor Cranes

Modernizing NorthPort’s Cargo Handling Capacity

NorthPort, the domestic terminal operated by International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) at Manila North Harbor, is augmenting its cargo handling capabilities through the acquisition of two advanced Konecranes Gottwald ESP 5 mobile harbor cranes (MHCs). These cranes represent a strategic upgrade aimed at streamlining port operations and accommodating the rising cargo volumes characteristic of growing domestic trade.

Development Over Two Decades in Terminal Equipment

Over the last twenty years, port terminals worldwide have witnessed a significant transformation in cargo handling technology. This evolution has been driven by increasing vessel sizes, more complex logistics chains, and stricter efficiency demands. Mobile harbor cranes similar to the Konecranes Gottwald ESP 5 have become crucial assets for terminals aiming to increase flexibility and productivity due to their mobility and powerful lifting capacities. NorthPort has historically balanced its fixed quay cranes with these mobile units, progressively integrating hybrid and sustainable technologies into its operations.

Details of the New Mobile Harbor Cranes

The two newly acquired mobile harbor cranes feature a 41-ton lifting capacity and offer a remarkable 46-meter outreach spanning thirteen container bays. These cranes are scheduled for deployment at Pier 10 and will operate alongside the existing eight quay cranes that service Terminal 1. Their robust specifications enable the terminal to simultaneously service multiple vessels more efficiently, thereby reducing vessel turnaround time and improving berth utilization.

Current Trends and Their Impact on Freight Carriers

With the steady increase in domestic trade demand, ICTSI’s continued investment in modern handling equipment provides freight carriers with enhanced service reliability and operational efficiency. This is crucial as higher cargo throughput and faster vessel processing directly translate into increased earning opportunities and better scheduling for carriers. Such enhancements can alleviate congestion-related delays, thus improving the overall predictability of shipments and deliveries—a key factor for logistics providers who must coordinate multimodal transport and supply chain schedules.

Supporting Infrastructure and Greener Technology Integration

In addition to the mobile harbor cranes, NorthPort is investing in four new hybrid Mitsui rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes, expected to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2026. These hybrid RTGs contribute significantly to sustainability goals by reducing diesel consumption and carbon emissions by approximately 49%, cutting annual carbon emissions from 2,186 tons to an estimated 1,109 tons. This adoption of greener equipment aligns with global efforts for more sustainable port operations and reflects a growing trend in logistics towards environmental responsibility without sacrificing service quality.

Interesting Figures on Equipment Efficiency and Environmental Impact

Equipment Type	Lifting Capacity / Impact	Environmental Benefit
Konecranes Gottwald ESP 5 MHC	41 tons; 46 m outreach	Improves cargo throughput and berth utilization
Hybrid Mitsui Rubber-Tired Gantry Cranes	Standard RTG function with hybrid power	49% reduction in diesel use and carbon emissions
Previous RTG Emissions	N/A	2,186 tons of annual CO2
Estimated Emissions After Hybrid Conversion	N/A	1,109 tons of annual CO2
