Strengthen Cartons, Fill Voids, and Wrap Pallets for Safer Shipments

Packaging fundamentals for safer e‑commerce shipments

Carton strength, void fill, and pallet wrap are the three pillars of effective packaging that reduce product damage, returns, and customer complaints.

How packaging practices evolved over the last two decades

Over the past 10–20 years, e‑commerce growth and the rise of fast, multi‑channel fulfillment forced suppliers, carriers, and retailers to rethink packaging. Early in the 2000s, many shipments still relied on minimal corrugated grades and loose fill, which was adequate for predictable store deliveries but poorly suited to complex parcel networks and international transport. The proliferation of small parcel carriers, automated sortation systems, and diverse last‑mile conditions led to standardized requirements for carton burst strength, cushioning, and pallet stability. Concurrently, sustainability pressures encouraged designers to replace excessive packaging with targeted solutions that preserve protection while reducing weight and waste.

Current trends and implications for freight carriers

Today, carriers face a transport environment where packaging quality directly affects claims, turnaround times, and profitability. Improved packaging reduces damage claims and handling costs, but it also changes load profiles: denser protective packaging increases average shipment volume and weight, affecting fuel consumption, trailer utilization, and tariff classification. For freight carriers, this creates both risk and opportunity—better packaging lowers claims and improves reputation, while optimized palletization and right‑sizing can enhance lane efficiency and per‑mile revenue.

Impact on carriers’ work and income

Carriers that advise shippers on packaging standards or offer value‑added services (packaging audits, palletizing, stretch wrapping) can unlock new revenue streams. Conversely, carriers handling poorly packaged freight face more damage disputes, longer handling times, and higher insurance costs. Operationally, carriers must balance throughput with protective handling: adopting standardized packaging checklists reduces variability, speeds loading, and minimizes costly rework.

Key statistics and cost drivers

Industry estimates indicate that packaging‑related damage continues to be a material cost for retail and logistics. Over the last decade, the share of retail conducted online rose from low single digits to more than one‑fifth of global retail sales, while damage and return rates for shipped goods commonly range from 2% to 6% depending on mode and product type. For large retailers and marketplaces, packaging failures can represent millions in annual claims and reverse logistics costs. These figures underline why consistent investment in carton quality, internal protection, and pallet integrity pays back through lower claims and higher customer satisfaction.

Practical components: carton strength, void fill, pallet wrap

Packaging Element	What to optimize	Benefits for logistics	Recommended metric
Carton strength	Use correct board grade, ECT/BCT values, and right‑sized boxes	Fewer crush failures; reduced single‑item claim rates	ECT 32–44 for parcels; BCT per pallet stack as required
Void fill	Cushion critical items, prevent movement, use recyclable fillers	Limits impact damage and friction wear during handling	Fill rate ≥95% of free space for fragile goods
Pallet wrap & unitization	Correct film gauge, overlap, corner protection, and banding	Improves load stability; reduces rework and handling incidents	Stretch wrap 20–40 wraps; film ≥12–15 microns depending on load

Best practices checklist for shippers and carriers

• Right‑size cartons to minimize empty space and reduce void fill needs.
• Specify corrugated grades and test for Burst/ECT to meet stacking loads.
• Use engineered void fill (molded pulp, paper cushions, air cushions) chosen for product weight and fragility.
• Prioritize pallet unitization with consistent wrapping patterns and pallet corner protectors.
• Apply clear labeling for orientation, fragility, and stacking limits to reduce mishandling.
• Train handling staff and drivers in load stability checks and basic damage prevention.

How modern logistics platforms help carriers adapt

Marketplaces and freight platforms can play a pivotal role in aligning packaging standards with carrier workflows. By providing transparent order specifications, real‑time communication, and verified shipment details, digital platforms reduce ambiguity that often leads to damage. They also enable carriers to select loads that match their equipment and handling capabilities, improving revenue per trip while reducing claim exposure.

GetTransport’s role for carriers

GetTransport.com offers carriers a flexible approach and modern technology that helps influence income and order selection. Through verified cargo requests, clear shipment profiles, and global reach, carriers can pick the most profitable orders, minimize dependence on the policies of large corporations, and offer packaging or palletization services as value‑added options. This fosters better margins, fewer disputes, and more predictable operations.

Operational benefits carriers can expect

• Greater control over order selection and capacity planning.
• Lower claims through access to clearer packing and stacking requirements.
• Opportunities to add packing, palletizing, or shrink‑wrap services as billable extras.
• Improved utilization of trailer space via right‑sized and unitized pallets.
