Best Practices for Shipping Mixed Cargo on Pallets
13/3/2026 · 1683 views
A fully loaded standard EUR/EPAL pallet (1200×800 mm) typically reaches practical gross weights between 1,000 and 1,500 kg for road haulage, constrained by fork capacity, trailer deck limits and legal axle loads; exceeding these limits increases handling risk and may trigger overweight penalties under CMR and national road regulations.
Core considerations before palletizing mixed cargo
When preparing mixed cargo on a single pallet, the immediate priorities are weight distribution, protection of fragile items, and compliance with transport rules. Determine the heaviest items first and place them at the base to create a low center of gravity. Check vehicle and equipment limits: forklift tine width, trailer payload, and container floor loading for international shipments.
Pallet selection and dimensional planning
Choose a pallet type that matches handling equipment and container footprints. For intermodal transport, a 1200×1000 mm or 1200×800 mm pallet is standard in many regions; for 20' and 40' containers, pallet orientation and stacking height must account for door aperture and container internal height.
| Type | Dimensions (mm) | Typical Load Capacity | Best Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| EUR/EPAL | 1200×800 | Up to 1,500 kg | European road & warehouse |
| ISO GMA | 1200×1000 | Up to 2,000 kg | International shipping, containerized |
| Half pallet | 800×600 | Up to 800 kg | Small mixed loads, retail |
Legal and regulatory checkpoints
Verify documentation and regulatory constraints prior to shipment. For road transport, the CMR regime governs carrier liability in many jurisdictions; for international container movements consider applicable customs documentation and any dangerous goods restrictions (IMDG or ADR). Accurate weight declarations are critical to avoid fines and to maintain insurance validity.
Step-by-step method to secure mixed cargo on a pallet
Follow a structured process to minimize damage and improve handling efficiency.
- Pre-sorting: Group items by weight, fragility, and stacking compatibility.
- Base layer: Place the heaviest, sturdiest items on the pallet base, aligned with pallet stringers for fork access.
- Stacking pattern: Use brick or column stacking depending on item shape; stagger seams for stability when using boxes.
- Void filling: Insert dunnage, corrugated inserts, or airbags to prevent movement between items.
- Edge protection: Place corner boards to prevent strap or wrap damage to goods.
- Securing: Apply strapping and then wrap with stretch film or use shrink-wrap; for high centers of gravity add top straps or nets.
- Labeling: Affix clear handling labels, weight stickers and orientation arrows; note special instructions such as “Fragile” or “Keep Dry.”
- Final check: Verify overall dimensions and weight, then record them in the consignment note and digital manifest.
Materials and equipment checklist
Essential items for mixed-pallet shipments include pallet, stretch film, steel or polyester straps, corner protectors, dunnage, pallet net, and a calibrated scale. For cross-border transport, consider using tamper-evident seals and serialized labels to support traceability.
Packing patterns and special-case guidance
Different cargo mixes require tailored approaches:
- Bulky + small items: Build a stable perimeter with bulky items and nest small items inside protected cavities.
- Fragile goods: Use cushioning layers and limit stacking height; consider single-item pallets for highly fragile loads.
- Mixed weights: Balance left-right and front-back; never place a heavy, rigid item on top of a soft, crushable package.
How improper palletizing impacts logistics operations
Poorly secured pallets increase dwell time at terminals, raise damage claims, and can force rework at distribution centers. From a transport planning perspective, unstable pallets affect load sequencing, reduce trailer utilization, and elevate safety risks during freight handling, which in turn increases insurance premiums and operational costs.
Quality control and claims mitigation
Implement a simple QC checklist at dispatch: verify weight and centre-of-gravity, inspect wrap tension and strapping, photograph each pallet, and retain digital proof of condition. If damage occurs in transit, documented evidence and accurate packing records dramatically speed claims processing and limit carrier liability disputes.
Optional industry statistics
Industry estimates indicate that palletized freight comprises a significant portion of less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments; many operators report that over half of LTL consignments are palletized, emphasizing the strategic importance of robust pallet standards and securement procedures across supply chains.
