20 Key Questions for Carriers on the Middle Corridor

Topic announcement: This guide presents a concise checklist of 20 essential questions shippers, freight carriers, and forwarders must ask before booking routes through the Middle Corridor.

Over the past one to two decades the Middle Corridor—an overland and short-sea transit axis connecting East Asia and Europe through the Caucasus and the South Caucasus—has evolved from a niche alternative into a competitive multimodal route. Investments in rail gauge interoperability, new terminals, and cross-border transit agreements have progressively reduced delays and improved predictability. Private operators and public infrastructure projects have together shaped an increasingly viable corridor for time-sensitive and high-value cargo.

Today the Middle Corridor is diversifying global supply chains and offering carriers new revenue streams beyond traditional maritime lanes. For freight carriers, this evolution means more opportunities for container trucking, multimodal dispatch, and cross-border haulage, but also increasing demands for compliance, documentation, and coordination among many stakeholders. Revenues can improve if carriers adapt with flexible asset deployment, better tracking, and partnerships with reliable forwarders.

Snapshot of recent performance: industry observers report steady year-on-year growth in container and rail transit volumes through the corridor in recent seasons, with notable increases in intermodal shipments and shorter overall transit times compared with some sea routes. Growth remains sensitive to infrastructure bottlenecks and seasonal variations, so carriers should plan capacity and contingency margins accordingly.

How a global marketplace can help carriers

Platforms like GetTransport.com enable carriers to convert corridor demand into income by exposing capacity to global shippers, facilitating transparent bidding and verified shipment requests. The platform’s tools for order selection, route matching, and documentation handling let carriers choose the most profitable orders while reducing dependency on a few large corporate contracts. For logistics operators, marketplace visibility can translate into optimized container trucking backhauls, better load factor management, and reduced empty-miles.

20 essential questions to ask before booking on the Middle Corridor

Organize these questions into categories—route and transit, documentation and customs, liability and insurance, operational execution—to evaluate any carrier, forwarder, or multimodal operator.

Route and transit reliability

• What is the proposed transit route and which border crossings will be used?
• What is the expected transit time and the range for delays or variability?
• Which terminals, rail operators, and trucking partners are contracted for each leg?
• Are there known seasonal or capacity constraints affecting this route?
• How are contingency routes and rerouting handled in case of disruption?

Documentation, customs and permits

• Which specific documents (TIR, carnets, customs declarations, transit guarantees) are required for each border?
• Who is responsible for customs clearance and paying duties or guarantees?
• Is electronic pre-declaration supported and what EDI channels are used?
• Are there special permits for oversized or hazardous cargo?
• How are delays at customs communicated and mitigated?

Liability, insurance and commercial terms

• What is the carrier’s and forwarder’s liability regime and applicable Incoterms?
• Is cargo covered by insurance for the entire multimodal journey and what are the limits?
• How are claims handled and what is the expected timeline for resolution?
• What are payment terms, penalties for detention, and demurrage rules?
• Are subcontractors used, and if so, how is responsibility allocated?

Operational execution and tracking

• What tracking and real-time visibility tools are available for the shipment?
• How is transshipment at intermodal hubs coordinated to minimize dwell time?
• What equipment will be used (container types, chassis, trailers) and are they compliant with destination regulations?
• Are loading and securing procedures certified for bulky or high-value cargos?
• What SLAs exist for notification of delays, arrivals, and delivery confirmations?

Documents and requirements at a glance

Document / Requirement	Purpose	Who provides / verifies
Commercial invoice & packing list	Value declaration and cargo description	Shipper / Forwarder
Transit declaration / TIR carnet	Customs transit facilitation across borders	Carrier / Customs broker
Rail waybill / CMR / Bill of Lading	Contract of carriage and proof of receipt	Carrier / Forwarder
Insurance certificate	Risk coverage for loss or damage	Shipper / Insurer
Permits for oversized/hazardous	Regulatory compliance for special cargo	Carrier / Shipper

Operational tips for freight carriers

• Invest in reliable tracking and document exchange to shorten customs processing times.
• Build partnerships with local agents at each border to handle on-the-ground variations.
• Price bids to include reasonable contingency and detention allowances.
• Offer end-to-end visibility to shippers as a premium service—this can increase haulage margins.
