How Responsible Tire Maintenance Can Significantly Reduce Waste and Benefits Freight Logistics

Introduction to the Impact of Tire Maintenance on Waste Reduction

Maintaining tires responsibly has a profound effect on reducing waste, potentially preventing the disposal and replacement of over five million tires per year. This article delves into the evolution of tire care practices, current regulations, and their implications, particularly for freight carriers and the logistics sector.

The Evolution of Tire Maintenance and Waste Prevention Over Two Decades

Over the last twenty years, tire maintenance has transformed into a critical sustainability practice. The awareness of how tire pressure and upkeep affect tire longevity has expanded dramatically. In European countries, initiatives such as the European Week for Waste Reduction have propelled greater emphasis on reducing, reusing, and recycling tires. Tire collecting and treatment entities, notably TNU in Spain, have championed educational campaigns, emphasizing the environmental and economic benefits of proper tire care. These efforts have evolved from periodic awareness weeks to ongoing year-round programs, reinforcing the significance of maintaining correct tire conditions to extend service life and decrease premature replacements.

Current Situation and Its Influence on Freight Carriers and Logistics

Today, approximately 15.3 million tires are marketed annually in Spain alone. However, a substantial 16% of drivers operate vehicles with incorrectly inflated tires, which reduces tire lifespan by 20% to 30%, leading to unnecessary early replacements. This misuse results not only in increased tire consumption but also additional resource use in manufacturing and transportation.

For freight and logistics professionals, this trend translates into higher operational costs and environmental footprints. The heavier the vehicle load and the longer the journeys, the more critical tire maintenance becomes to ensure safety, efficient fuel consumption, and cargo protection. Maintaining tires at recommended pressures can yield fuel savings of up to 10%, significantly reducing transport costs in long-haul operations. Moreover, well-maintained tires lessen the risk of accidents caused by blowouts or poor traction, which can otherwise cause shipment delays and increased liabilities.

Environmental and Economic Benefits of Correct Tire Pressure

Effect	Impact on Low Tire Pressure	Potential Savings with Proper Maintenance
Fuel Consumption Increase	Up to 10% more fuel burned	Up to 10% fuel savings
Tire Life Reduction	20% to 30% shorter tire lifespan	Prolonged tire usage by 20% to 30%
CO₂ Emissions	Additional 13 million tons of CO₂ in Europe annually	Reduced emissions by millions of tons per year

The Role of Legislation in Tire Waste Management

The enactment of laws such as the Real Decreto 712/2025 in Spain has strengthened the frameworks governing end-of-life tire management. This decree focuses on reducing tire waste by enhancing tire reuse, recycling, and minimizing environmental impact throughout the tire lifecycle. Key provisions advance the application of circular economy principles by promoting resource-efficient actions including recovery of rubber, steel, and textile materials from discarded tires. Importantly, the legislation also emphasizes awareness campaigns alerting drivers and businesses about the benefits of correct tire care to prevent premature tire disposal.

Key Provisions of Real Decreto 712/2025

• Prioritization of waste prevention and impact reduction throughout tire life cycle

• Measures to prolong tire useful life through maintenance and reuse

• Support for recycling and resource recovery activities

• Educational initiatives promoting responsible tire use

Safety Benefits Tied to Responsible Tire Maintenance

Beyond sustainability, proper tire care is essential for road safety, especially in freight transport. Incorrect inflation pressures reduce traction and increase braking distances, elevating the risks for road incidents. Operating with just 0.5 bar below recommended tire pressure can decrease tire life by around 20%, and 1 bar less may shorten it by as much as 30%, compounding replacement rates. Every tire kept in operation through adequate maintenance prevents roughly 9 kg of waste and saves nearly 2,000 liters of water otherwise consumed in manufacturing a new tire.
