Designing measurable KPIs for Dutch e‑commerce fulfilment centres
21/3/2026 · 1174 views
Order-picking accuracy targets in Dutch e-commerce fulfilment centres are typically set between 99.5% and 99.9%, while line-item throughput and dock-to-despatch cycle times are measured in minutes per order rather than daily averages to reflect tight same‑day and next‑day delivery commitments.
Core KPI categories and definitions
A robust KPI framework must separate measurement domains so managers can act on specific bottlenecks. The three primary categories are accuracy, throughput, and cost-efficiency, each with operational sub-metrics.
Accuracy
- Order accuracy: percentage of orders shipped without errors (wrong SKU, missing item, wrong quantity).
- Pick accuracy: correct picks per total picks; measured per SKU and per operator.
- Return rate due to fulfilment errors: returns attributable to fulfilment defects per 1,000 orders.
Throughput
- Lines picked per hour (LPH): split by zone (fast movers, slow movers) and shift.
- Orders per hour (OPH): used for capacity planning and peak staffing.
- Dock-to-despatch time: elapsed time from goods receipt to availability for shipment.
Cost-efficiency
- Cost per order: fully allocated operational cost divided by orders processed.
- Labour cost per line: direct wage and FTE overheads normalized to picks.
- Utilisation rate: share of productive time vs available time for staff and equipment.
Setting realistic targets for Dutch fulfilment centres
Targets must reflect local market specifics: compact warehouses near urban centres, high parcel density, and fast last‑mile expectations. Establish baseline metrics over a 12‑week rolling window to smooth seasonality, then apply tiered targets:
- Baseline — current performance averaged over 12 weeks.
- Stretch — operationally achievable within 6 months with process & training improvements.
- Best-practice — aspirational levels representing industry leaders in the region.
Example target bands
| Metric | Baseline | Stretch | Best-practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Order accuracy | 99.2% | 99.6% | 99.9% |
| Lines picked per hour | 350 | 420 | 500+ |
| Cost per order | €3.20 | €2.60 | €2.10 |
Data collection, calculation and governance
Reliable KPIs require consistent data models across WMS, OMS and TMS. Use event-driven timestamps for key lifecycle events (pick start, pick complete, pack complete, handover to carrier) and calculate metrics in near real‑time where possible to enable rapid corrective action.
- Define single sources of truth: the WMS for picks, the OMS for orders, and the TMS for handover.
- Automate calculations for rolling averages and SLA breach counts to avoid ad hoc reporting.
- Implement role-based dashboards: operational supervisors need minute-level alerts; executives require daily summaries.
Data quality checks
Implement validation rules such as matching pick quantities to order lines, barcode scan rate thresholds (>98%), and reconciliation between manifest and carrier acceptance to reduce measurement noise.
Operationalising KPIs: from measurement to continuous improvement
KPIs are only useful when tied to procedures. Embed metrics into standard operating procedures (SOPs), shift briefings and performance reviews.
- Use daily huddles to highlight exceptions (accuracy drops, backlog increases).
- Apply root-cause analysis for recurring breaches; link corrective actions to training, slotting changes or system fixes.
- Introduce incentive schemes that reward accuracy and balanced throughput, rather than raw speed alone.
Sample escalation workflow
- Trigger: Order accuracy falls below stretch for two consecutive shifts.
- Immediate action: Pause outbound of affected SKU family; perform targeted recount and hold shipments where feasible.
- 24‑hour review: Convene operations, quality, and IT to identify source (mis-picks, barcode mismatch, packing errors).
- 7‑day follow-up: Implement corrective SOP and monitor for recurrence.
Legal, regulatory and contractual considerations
KPIs used for carrier contracting and customer SLAs must respect local laws on labour, worker privacy, and fair contracting. For example, tie KPI penalties to documented, mutually agreed service levels and ensure that performance monitoring complies with Dutch employment regulations.
- Include force majeure and exception-handling clauses in contracts for carrier and client SLAs.
- Be transparent about measurement methods to avoid disputes over reported figures.
- Document change-control for KPI revisions so that historical comparisons remain valid.
Example KPI dashboard layout
Design dashboards with three tiers: operational (real-time), tactical (daily/weekly), and strategic (monthly/quarterly).
| Dashboard | Key widgets | Users |
|---|---|---|
| Operational | Active pick lanes, accuracy alerts, carrier ETA heatmap | Shift supervisors, floor managers |
| Tactical | Throughput trends, labour utilisation, cost per order | Operations managers, planning |
| Strategic | Service-level compliance, monthly P&L impact, capital utilisation | Executives, finance, commercial |
How GetTransport can help carriers and fulfilment operators
GetTransport provides a flexible marketplace that connects carriers and fulfilment operators, offering modern technology to select orders and manage capacity dynamically. By integrating platform data with carrier schedules, operators can prioritize lanes that improve margin while maintaining contractual SLAs. The platform also supports verified order requests and transparent pricing information so smaller carriers can avoid dependence on large corporate contracts.
Operational benefits
- Real‑time visibility into available freight and preferred lanes.
- Ability to bid selectively on shipments that match equipment and capacity.
- Analytics to assess profit-per-load and inform tactical decisions on route selection and asset allocation.
Forecast and recommended action
Short-term: expect steady pressure on throughput during peak seasons with marginal gains possible through optimization of slotting and dynamic labour allocation. If the news or KPI changes are local to the Netherlands, the global impact may be modest, but the operational lessons are widely applicable.
Provide a short forecast on how this news could impact the global logistics. If it's insignificant globally, please mention that. However, highlight that it's still relevant to us, as GetTransport.com aims to stay abreast of all developments and keep pace with the changing world.
