Navigating the Path to Sustainable Shipping Without Economic Disruption

Shipping’s Pivotal Role in Global Trade and Its Evolution

The shipping industry remains the backbone of international commerce, carrying nearly half of all goods traded between the EU and other countries. Over the past two decades, its share in global imports and exports has steadily increased. Between 2002 and 2023, the proportion of goods transported by sea grew by approximately nine percentage points for imports and over four for exports, signaling the sector's expanding footprint.

This growth reflects both the essential nature of maritime transport and the rising demand for global connectivity. Historically, routes like the Suez Canal have been critical in shaping shipping efficiency by significantly reducing transit distances and, consequently, costs and emissions.

Present Challenges and the Push for Decarbonisation

Shipping currently accounts for about 2-3% of global CO2 emissions, matching the aviation industry’s environmental footprint. The sector faces increasing pressure from regulators, such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which has proposed a carbon emissions levy set for decision by 2026. This underscores a global commitment to sustainability but also presents challenges.

Given that the global fleet includes roughly 100,000 large vessels, abrupt transitions to greener operations are unrealistic. The existing ships largely run on fossil fuels, with about half powered by diesel and close to half configured for alternative fuel options. Meanwhile, cleaner options like biofuels, methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen engines are in development but face hurdles related to fuel availability, cost, and energy density—especially for long-haul voyages.

For logistics and freight carriers, this evolving landscape introduces both uncertainty and opportunity. As cleaner fuels tend to be up to four times more expensive than traditional options, the anticipated carbon levy could rebalance economics by encouraging greener choices. Freight carriers willing to adopt new technologies or shift to green-ready vessels may find new avenues to optimize their operations and revenues.

Technological Innovations in Shipping Emissions Reduction

• Carbon Capture Systems: Emerging technologies can capture up to 70% of CO2 emissions directly from ship engines, reducing environmental impact without requiring immediate fleet replacement.

• Alternative Fuels: LNG is currently classified as an alternative fuel, offering a stepping stone despite being a fossil fuel. Next-generation fuels like bio-methanol and ammonia promise near-zero emissions but require further infrastructure development.

• Engine Modernization: New engine models are being delivered that can operate on multiple fuel types, providing flexibility as fuel availability and regulations evolve.

Economic Impact and Market Trends for Freight Carriers

Aspect	Impact on Fleet and Cargo Transport
Fuel Costs	Green fuels currently cost 2-4 times more than fossil fuels, pushing carriers to reconsider pricing and efficiency strategies.
Regulatory Environment	The upcoming carbon levy could increase operating costs but also level the playing field for eco-friendly shipping practices.
Fleet Composition	New ship orders are increasingly green-ready, signaling a positive shift toward sustainability despite lingering pace concerns.
Operational Flexibility	Technologies like carbon capture and hybrid engines allow carriers to extend the lifespan of existing vessels while reducing emissions.
