FedEx to Close Texas Logistics Center, Lay Off Hundreds of Employees

Overview of FedEx's Texas Logistics Facility Closure

FedEx is set to lay off 856 employees in its Coppell, Texas logistics facility, which is scheduled for closure by April 2026. This decision follows a significant customer transitioning to a new third-party logistics provider, prompting the discontinuation of FedEx’s operations at this site.

Historical Development: Workforce Changes in FedEx and Logistics Sector

Over the last one to two decades, the logistics industry has experienced continual shifts driven by evolving customer demands, technological advancements, and changes in supply chain dynamics. FedEx has periodically adjusted its workforce, particularly within North Texas, reflecting broader patterns in the logistics and manufacturing sectors. Earlier in 2023, FedEx announced layoffs at other locations in Texas, such as Fort Worth, Garland, and Plano, signaling systemic pressures within the sector that force companies to optimize operations frequently.

Current Situation and Impact on Freight Carriers

The phased layoffs beginning in January 2024 result directly from a major client switching logistics providers, which underlines the competitive and rapidly evolving nature of the logistics landscape. The permanent closure of the Coppell facility reduces FedEx’s operational capacity in the region, potentially affecting freight carriers who rely on stable contract volumes and predictable service points.

This dynamic creates challenges for freight carriers in terms of adapting to reduced demand from traditional customers and finding new opportunities amidst shifting supply chains. However, it also opens avenues for independent carriers to leverage digital logistics platforms and diversify their order portfolios to maintain or even increase their income.

Phases of Layoffs and Support for Workers

Phase	Timeframe	Number of Employees Affected	Support Measures
Initial Notice	January 2024	Beginning of layoffs	Job placement assistance, relocation aid, severance where applicable
Final Closure	April 29, 2026	Total of 856 employees	Potential redeployment within FedEx for some employees

Broader Industry Trends Affecting Job Reductions

• The logistics sector faces significant pressure from shifting customer preferences, technological disruptions, and competitive outsourcing to third-party logistics providers.

• Trade environment complexities and changes in manufacturing output also contribute to fluctuating labor demands.

• Emerging sectors such as electric vehicle markets may impact volume and types of shipments, adding uncertainty to logistics employment landscapes.

Statistical Snapshot of Recent FedEx Layoffs in North Texas

Besides the Coppell layoff of 856 employees, recent figures include the following:

• 305 employee layoffs at a Fort Worth FedEx facility announced in May 2023.

• 131 employee layoffs spread across Garland and Plano sites as of June 2023.

These figures illustrate a significant contraction in regional logistics employment at FedEx, reflecting adaptation pressures across the industry.
