Lidl Austria Expands Use of Mercedes-Benz Electric Trucks in Distribution

The Growing Role of Electric Trucks in Retail Logistics

Lidl Austria is significantly advancing its commitment to sustainable transport by placing an order for 42 new Mercedes-Benz battery-electric trucks slated for delivery by mid-2027. This move is aimed at enhancing the company's grocery retail distribution while reducing the environmental footprint of the freight operations involved in last-mile deliveries.

Evolution of Electric Truck Deployment in Retail Supply Chains

Over the past two decades, electric trucks have gradually transitioned from niche prototypes to commercially viable logistics vehicles. Early electric delivery trucks were limited by short range and modest battery capacity, restricting their adoption mainly to urban environments or special uses. However, technological strides in battery chemistry and capacity have reached a point where electric trucks can now manage longer routes and heavyweight cargo in retail distribution networks.

In particular, the introduction of Mercedes-Benz's eActros 600 model, first delivered to Lidl Austria, represents a major leap. These vehicles are powered by lithium iron phosphate batteries with capacities exceeding 600 kWh, enabling a driving range that can approach 500 kilometers on a single charge. Such specifications place electric trucks well within operational parameters for grocery deliveries, a sector traditionally reliant on diesel-powered trucks.

Current Trends and Impact on Freight Carriers' Operations and Income

Today, Lidl Austria operates a fleet of electric trucks bolstered by the newly constructed charging infrastructure at its Laakirchen logistics hub. By the end of 2024, it plans to deploy 20 eActros 600 vehicles nationwide, building on its initial 14-unit order. This expansion signals a shift toward electric freight solutions in food retail logistics, where cost savings on fuel and maintenance, alongside environmental compliance, influence carrier choices and earnings potential. Freight carriers working with retailers adopting electric fleets may see changes in scheduling, route planning, and vehicle utilization.

The enhanced reliability and lower operating costs of electric trucks mean carriers can adjust their business models for efficiency. However, investments in electric vehicles require carriers to consider infrastructure availability and charging times, potentially reshaping contractual terms and income stability. The growing number of electric trucks also impacts freight rates and market competition.

Battery and Vehicle Performance Highlights

Specification	Detail
Battery Capacity	More than 600 kWh
Range per Full Charge	Up to 500 km (at 40 tonnes, 20°C)
Battery Chemistry	Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4)
Expected Battery Life	At least 80% capacity retention after 10 years or 1.2 million km

Statistics on Electric Truck Adoption in Logistics

While precise global sales figures fluctuate, Europe and particularly Austria have seen a measurable increase in the adoption of electric trucks in commercial fleets since 2020. Lidl Austria illustrates this with its ongoing phasing-in of electric vehicles, aiming for nearly 60 eActros 600 trucks by the end of 2027. These figures align with broader EU objectives targeting carbon-neutral logistics and substantial reductions of greenhouse gases from freight transport by mid-century.
