December Surge Narrows Air Freight Capacity and Drives Up Rates Globally

December Air Freight Supply Tightens as Demand Rises

December traditionally marks a peak season for air freight driven by holiday shopping and promotional events, increasing volumes and intensifying capacity constraints. This dynamic plays a central role in shaping global logistics patterns towards year-end, affecting shipment schedules and freight costs worldwide.

Evolution of Peak Season Air Freight Over Two Decades

Over the past 20 years, air cargo has undergone significant transformation fueled by the growth of e-commerce and just-in-time supply chains. Advancements in technology have enabled faster processing and tracking of shipments, but the surge in parcel volume during peak months, especially November and December, consistently challenges capacity limits. The integration of Asia-Pacific markets into global supply chains has particularly amplified the demand on key trade lanes from manufacturing hubs to consumer markets. Meanwhile, tight airport logistics, evolving airline fleet compositions, and regulatory frameworks have influenced how capacity is allocated seasonally.

Current Trends Impacting Freight Carriers

As December unfolds, air freight capacity is notably constrained across major regions including Northeast and Southeast Asia, North America, and Europe. Increased volumes from e-commerce giant hubs and the movement of high-tech equipment place pressure on carriers to expand their network and optimize cargo distribution. Rates are rising in response to persistent capacity shortages, compelling freight carriers to strategize carefully around booking lead times and route planning. For instance, carriers moving goods from China, Taiwan, and South Korea to the US and Europe experience heightened demand alongside operational delays such as ground handling congestion. These factors can reduce transit speed but also create opportunities for carriers who can efficiently manage these challenges.
