Preparing Cargo for Amazon Fulfillment Center Requirements

Shipments bound for Amazon Fulfillment Centers require strict verification of carton dimensions, declared weight, and visible FNSKU/ASIN or SSCC barcodes prior to pickup; non-compliant units are commonly flagged at intake and can trigger delays, chargebacks, or return-to-sender orders that disrupt carrier routing and warehouse throughput.

Core requirements for Amazon-bound cargo

Carriers and shippers must treat Amazon shipments as a set of interdependent checkpoints: accurate measurement, consistent weight declaration, precise labeling, and compliant palletization. Logistics partners should confirm all metrics during pickup to reduce rework at the fulfillment center dock.

Dimensions and weight verification

Dimensioning errors are a frequent source of disputes between carriers and shippers. Accurate length × width × height (L×W×H) for every carton and proper tare calculations for pallets are essential. Amazon uses measured dimensions for rate and space allocation; mismatches can cause automated systems to reroute or quarantine shipments.

• Measure each carton—include protrusions and cushioning in final dimensions.
• Weigh to the nearest 0.1 kg/0.1 lb and record gross weight (carton + product + packaging).
• Validate pallet weight against carrier and Amazon limits to avoid yard refusal.

Labeling: what must be visible and scannable

Labels must contain unambiguous identifiers and match the manifest. Common label types for Amazon shipments include FNSKU for unit-level inventory, carton labels with Amazon barcodes, and SSCC labels for pallet tracking when required. Ensure barcodes are unobstructed, not folded across edges, and printed at a resolution that scans reliably under warehouse lighting.

• Place carton labels on the longest side where practical.
• Avoid applying labels over seams or handles.
• Use thermal transfer or high-quality laser printing; low-resolution inkjet labels often fail.

Packaging and palletization rules

Palletized loads should be stable, banded or shrink-wrapped, and comply with the center’s stacking and height limits. A single unstable pallet can block receiving lanes and increase handling time, causing knock-on effects in daily throughput.

Requirement	Typical Standard	Operational Impact If Non-compliant
Carton integrity	Double-walled for bulky/fragile goods	Repack at FC; delay and additional cost
Label placement	One label per carton, unobstructed	Scan failures, manual intervention
Pallet stability	Shrink-wrap, corner boards, max height per FC	Re-stacking, refusal, or extra handling fees
Declared weight	Matches weighbridge/pallet scale	Billing disputes and chargebacks

Operational checklist for shippers and carriers

Implement a pre-shipment verification workflow that cross-checks physical metrics with the electronic manifest. This reduces dock-time disputes and improves predictability for freight planning.

• Confirm Amazon shipment ID and corresponding SKU/FNSKU match packing list.
• Measure and weigh each carton and pallet at point of origin; capture photos if possible.
• Apply and scan carton and pallet labels to validate readability.
• Record deviations and adjust EDI/portal declarations before tendering the load.
• Communicate any exceptions immediately to Amazon and the carrier partner.

Common non-compliance cases and logistics consequences

Typical errors include mismatched ASINs, missing FNSKUs, under-declared pallet weight, and poor shrink-wrapping. Consequences range from short-term delays to recurring chargebacks that undermine carrier profit margins and increase unit handling costs for shippers.

• Missing or unreadable FNSKU: inventory not receipted, returned for correction.
• Incorrect carton dimensions: automatic fee adjustments or reclassification.
• Unstable pallet: additional handling fees or refuse at dock.

Practical packing guidance

Focus on repeatability in packing operations. Standard operating procedures and checklists reduce human error and support traceability when exceptions arise. Protect products with appropriate void-fill, use standardized carton sizes where possible to streamline containerization, and mark bulky or oversized items clearly.

Recommended materials and practices

• Use certified pallets (e.g., heat-treated where required), consistent pallet footprint to simplify loading.
• Apply corner boards and strapping for tall stacks and heavy cartons.
• Label all sides for quick identification during cross-docking or mixed SKU builds.

How GetTransport helps carriers and shippers comply

GetTransport provides a digital marketplace with tools that support accurate tendering and order selection. Carriers can preview shipment manifests, access detailed dimension and weight data, and select loads that match their equipment and compliance capabilities. The platform’s real-time visibility and filtering for label and pallet requirements help carriers avoid orders likely to result in chargebacks or delays.

By combining route optimization, verified shipment details, and a flexible allocation model, GetTransport allows carriers to influence their income—choosing higher-yield orders or those that fit their compliance profile—while reducing dependence on large, rigid corporate programs. For shippers, the marketplace accelerates matching to compliance-ready carriers that understand Amazon FC requirements.

Optional fact

Fact: A single mislabel or under-declared measurement can escalate into days of processing delays and additional handling costs; early verification at pickup is the most effective mitigation.

Best practices for integration and tech adoption

Adopt simple, automated checks: dimensioning devices integrated with TMS/WMS, label-print validation, and mobile photo capture at pickup. These measures convert manual checkpoints into auditable events that reduce disputes and streamline reconciliation between carrier and marketplace invoices.

Checklist for technology-enabled compliance

• On-board dimensioners and scales at packing stations.
• Automated label validation software tied to the manifest.
• Mobile apps for pickup confirmation and photo evidence.
