Introduction to FAST Logistics’ Crossdock Innovation
The recent launch of FAST Logistics Group’s crossdock facility in Calamba, Laguna, marks a significant step forward in delivery cost efficiency for fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies. Its innovative approach to freight consolidation and shipment scheduling offers a fresh alternative to the traditional full truckload rate system.
A Historical Perspective on FMCG Delivery and Crossdocking
Over the past two decades, the FMCG sector has grappled with balancing timely deliveries to retail outlets and controlling logistics costs. Traditionally, FMCG companies have relied heavily on full truckload shipments, even when truck capacity remains underutilized. This practice often leads to inefficiencies—trucks operating below capacity, unnecessary routing, excessive empty miles, and higher carbon emissions.
Crossdock facilities emerged as a logistics strategy aimed at addressing some of these inefficiencies by consolidating shipments, reducing storage time, and optimizing truck utilization. However, many FMCG companies have been hesitant to co-load freight with competitors, viewing such collaboration as risky or complex. As a result, the potential benefits of crossdocking in this sector were often underexploited.
Evolution of Today’s Delivery Landscape and Implications for Freight Carriers
Presently, the demand for delivery efficiency and sustainability is driving FMCG companies to reconsider their logistics strategies. The Calamba crossdock facility introduces “Flow by FAST,” a system that schedules co-loading of shipments based on precise retailer receiving windows, maximizing truck capacity and reducing empty miles.
This approach shifts the pricing model from the conventional full truckload rate to a per occupied space basis, potentially reducing delivery costs by up to 32%. For freight carriers, this means fluctuating revenue potential based on truck space usage, promoting greater collaboration and operational efficiency.
Significant Data Underpinning the Need for Change
| Metric | Traditional FMCG Truck Utilization | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Truck Capacity Usage | 30%–52% | High rate of underutilized space leads to inefficient trips |
| Delivery Cost Reduction | Up to 32% | Achieved through per occupied space pricing |
| Empty Miles Reduction | Significant | Results in lowered emissions and sustainability gains |
Such statistics repeatedly underscore the inefficiencies in the sector, signaling the potential for improved haulage methods that benefit carriers, producers, and retailers alike.
